Kevin Powers has been named Freshman of the Year and Dominican University of California teammate
Jake Fritz was an unanimous selection on the All Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association First Team.
Jake Bernstein, another Dominican freshman, was named First Team All-WILA while the Penguins landed eight players on the WILA's Second Team, led by senior
Reed Upson, the leading scorer in Dominican lacrosse history.
The Penguins finished the season tied for first place in the WILA with Colorado Mesa, but lost the championship by way of tiebreaking procedures. Dominican's 7-6 record marked its first winning season in the school's eight-year history of lacrosse.
“As much as we embrace a 'team first' approach to this program, it's great to see individual accomplishments recognized,” Head Coach
Ned Webster said. “We will carry these efforts into the off-season as we work even harder towards achieving our main goals in 2013.”
In his freshman season, Powers wound up tied for fifth in the nation in NCAA Division II lacrosse with an average of 4.00 points per game. He also was ninth in the country in assists, averaging 1.83 a contest for the 11th highest scoring offense in the land.
Fritz, Power's high school teammate in Issaquah, Wash., led the WILA in scoring with 30 goals and 20 assists for 50 points, two more than Powers. Fritz had a team single-game season-best seven goals in Dominican's season-ending 15-8 victory over Notre Dame de Namur University in the “Battle For The Bay” game at Kezar Stadium on April 28.
Bernstein, a midfielder, had 17 points in the Penguins' final six games, four of which were wins. He finished fourth in points on the team this season, behind Fritz, Powers and Upson.
Upson, an attacker, concluded his four-year career at Dominican with 21 goals and 34 points in his senior season, the fourth best total this year in the WILA. He was joined on the WILA Second Team by junior midfielder
Cam Evangelho, who led the Penguins with five man-up goals this season. Dominican's man-up offensive unit finished first in NCAA Div. II with a .458 scoring percentage.

Dylan Acevedo, both Dominican freshmen, were Second Team All-WILA. Acevedo's .588 face-off winning percentage was 10th best in the country and his 59 ground balls led the Penguins. Dominican finished seventh in NCAA Div. II in ground balls with an average of 36.23 per game.
