Dominican Men Open Season with Stalemate

La Jolla, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team was outshot by UC San Diego 24-6 in Thursday's season opener but neither team found the back of the goal, resulting in a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes of play.

Rafael Garcia and David Mendez led the Penguins (0-0-1) with two shots apiece. Mendez, who received a red card in overtime, and Pedro Guevara each took a shot on goal and Shane Huiberts came off the bench and put a shot on frame.

The Dominican defense staved off a Triton attack that took 9 shots on goal and keeper Matthew Carlson was there to stop every ball that came his way.

The Tritons (0-0-1), pegged to finish fifth in the CCAA South Division, were led by David Bakal's eight shots and four shots on goal.

Dominican now travels to Cal Poly Pomona for an 11:30 a.m. match on Saturday, September 4.
