PHOENIX, AZ - Dominican University of California freshman guard
Austin Bryan has been selected the Pacific West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The Wenatchee, Wash. native becomes the first men's basketball player in Penguins' history to receive the honor.
The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Jan. 25, for games contested Jan. 18-24.
Bryan led Dominican to a 1-1 week by averaging 30 points per game while shooting a remarkable 18-of-26 (.692) from the floor. He also connected on seven of his 10 (.700) three-point attempts, while going a perfect 17-of-17 from the free throw line. He ranked first in the PacWest in scoring, foul shooting, and three-pointers made per game (3.5), and was fifth in three-point shooting. Bryan also finished seventh during the week in field goal percentage.
Bryan ranks third in the PacWest in scoring at 21 points per game in conference play, fourth in free throw percentage (.893), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.444), second in three-pointers made per game (2.4), and is tied for third in blocked shots per game (1.2).
During the week, the Dominican men fell in the final seconds 74-72 to first place Dixie State, who remains 5-0 in PacWest play, and defeated cross-bay rival Academy of Art University 82-62.
On the women's side, Dominican senior guard
Alisha Flaaten was named to the PacWest Women's Top 10 Weekly Honor Roll. The Hayward native averaged 15.5 points, 2.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game in a pair of losses during the week. She ranked sixth in scoring for the week in the PacWest, ranked ninth in three-point shooting on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting, and led the PacWest in three-pointers made per game (4.0) for the week.
Flaaten ranks ninth in the PacWest in scoring at 13.8 points per game, third in three-point field goal percentage (.516), and leads the conference in three-point field goals made per game with 3.2.
The Dominican basketball teams will travel to Belmont to face Notre Dame de Namur University on Friday, Jan. 29 before embarking on a four-game road trip against the PacWest's four schools located in Hawai'i. Tipoff against the Argonauts is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
