SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Mike Wells, a 6-foot, 185-pound junior guard for Dominican University of California’s men’s basketball team, averages less than two points a game and played only eight minutes and scored only two points in the Penguins’ 82-62 Pacific West Conference win over Academy of Art of San Francisco on Saturday night but he was a tough act to follow on Friday night. He was named “Mr. Penguin 2010” in a light-hearted “beauty pageant” among 14 Dominican students on the San Rafael campus. Junior Ryan Vella from the men’s soccer team was named first runner up and Athletics intern David Morris was named second runner up.

Wells apparently wooed the panel of six judges, with his wit, charm and good looks but not his talent. In the talent competition, Wells and sophomore teammate Mark Lewis dueled in a “Wiffle ball-and-woofing” contest. Wells spun around five times on stage, whiffed on trying to hit a Wiffle ball into the audience then competed against Lewis in chugging chocolate milk and licking the creamy center off an Oreo cookie. Then they spread peanut butter onto a sandwich with their hands and tried to “Joey Chestnut” each other. Wells was so far behind in his talent competition faceoff with Lewis that he gave up and tucked his half-eaten sandwich into his shorts.

Other talent acts included dance routines by mens' basketball Alastair Flack and Alex Ward with Vella and the assistance of men's soccer player Esera Vegas; lacrosse playerss Kyle Mitchell and Reed Upson doing their best *NSYNC dance; Rafael Garcia dancing with a ribbon and classmate Daryl Morris; “drawing” by lacrosse captain Emmett Faricy - Faricy wrote his phone number down for his fans in the audience to call; juggling by lacrosse player Cam Evangelho; a singing-turned-crowd participation version of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” led by soccer player Spencer Eckert; soccer's Casey Gibson’s rendition of “Pants on the Ground” of American Idol fame; an acoustic version of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” by Athletics intern David Morris; and golfer Scotty Holdridge had the whole crowd singing along while he sang and played acoustic guitar.

Wells evidently scored better in the on stage Question-and-Answer portion of the contest – although Gibson caught everyone off guard when the Flagstaff, Ariz. native answered his question with a British accent, tuxedo modeling (with tuxedos generously provided by Selix Tuedxo Rentals), the “Dominican spirit” competition which included the debut of the Penguin Snuggie, as worn by by a waddling Holdridge, and the swimsuit competition. Though Lewis may have topped Wells again when he strutted in a blue-and-red “Superman” Speedo all lathered up with baby oil.

In all, about 300 people poured into Angelico Hall, including University President Joseph R. Fink, for the event, which helped raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
