SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican Uniersity of California women's basketball team found itself outmatched in the paint against Dixie State College, dropping an 83-62 Pacific West Conference decision on Monday night at the Conlan Center.
The Lady Penguins (4-11/1-3) were outscored 44-24 in the paint, as Dixie State (8-6/4-1) forwards Tayna Clark, Johnna Brown, and Deanna Daniels combined for 33 points and 21 rebounds. Meanwhile the Red Storm contained Dominican center
Raquel Gomes and forward
Melissa Wise. Gomes went 6-for-8 and finished the night with 12 points but just three rebounds while Wise found herself in foul trouble, fouling out with 7:50 left in regulation.
Dominican fell behind 6-0 in the first minute of play and sound found themselves in a 16-6 hole with 16:28 to play. At 11:23 the Red Storm pushed the lead to 12 on a Shayla Martinez three-pointer. Two straight three-pointers by
Kimi Nakamura sparked a 9-2 run for the Lady Penguins and cut the lead to two with 7:36 to play. One of
Alisha Flaaten's four three-pointers tied the ballgame at 35 all with 4:45 to play. However, the Red Storm answered with a 9-0 run that closed out the first half and put Dixie State ahead 44-35.
The Red Storm doubled the halftime lead by the 12-minute mark, posting a 64-46 lead on an Amber Scruggs jumper. A pair of free throws by
Michaelia Baskerville trimmed the deficit to 14 with 11:02 to go but that's as close as the Lady Penguins would get. A 10-0 Red Storm run pushed the lead to 24 and a Clark free throw gave Dixie its biggest lead at 25 with about five minutes to go. A Baskerville layup cut the lead to 21 to end the game.
Flaaten shot the ball well for the Lady Penguins, leading all players with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Nakamura added 11 points in the effort.
Brown led the Red Storm with 16 points. Jessie Ingraham added 15 points and Scruggs added 11 in the victory.
The Lady Penguins next travel to San Francisco's Academy of Art, who is currently mired in a three-game losing streak. The game, originally designated a home game for the Penguins, will now be a home game for AAU and will be played at the famous Kezar Pavilion.
