SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team began the season on the right foot with a 90-75 exhibition win over Pacific Union College on Thursday night at the Conlan Center.

The Penguins, who join the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference this season, were tested early by their former California Pacific Conference opponent.  James McKinnon got Dominican on the board first but fell behind 19-24 before evening things at 28-28. Dominican took a slight 50-46 halftime lead into the locker room on a Michael Wells free throw.

Kenny Penn scored first for PUC in the second half but Austin Bryan drained seven straight points to extend the Dominican lead to 63-48. Ensuing baskets by Alex Ward, Mark Lewis, and Killian Larson extended the lead further and another Bryan basket capped a 25-2 run to put Dominican ahead for good at 75-53.

The Penguins finished the game with a 20-17 run to hold off the Pioneers for the exhibition win.

Bryan led all scorers with 19 points and was one of six players in double digits for the Penguins. Tyler Sokol poured in 11 points while Larson, Mark Lewis, Kellis Love, and Alex Ward all added 10 points apiece. McKinnon added nine points and Alastair Flack rounded out scoring with seven points.

Larson led the Penguins with nine rebounds and two blocks. Flack and Mike Wells dished out five assists apiece.

Kameron Barnes was one of four Pioneers to reach double digts and led PUC with 19 points.

"I really liked the way the young guys stepped up tonight to the level of [collegiate] play," said Dominican Head Coach Bret Tovani. "We have a lot to look forward to. Now that this is behind us it's time to focus on our next challenge."

The Dominican men host another exhibition on Nov. 12 when California Maritime Academy, another CalPac team comes calling. The Keelhaulers are led by head coach Bryan Rooney, a 2003 Dominican graduate, Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Conlan Center and will be broadcast live worldwide on the internet at radio.dominican.edu.
