SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team was upset by California Maritime Academy in exhibition play on Thursday night in a 72-70 overtime loss.

The Penguins got on the scoreboard first on an Alex Ward jump shot and were soon off and running with a 10-point lead after an Austin Bryan three-pointer. At the twelve minute mark, Maritime's Andrew Medeiros tied things at 13 with a jump shot. Medeiros then nailed a three-pointer to pull the Keelhaulers ahead 16-13. A Killian Larson three-pointer gave Dominican the lead back at 20-18. Maritime took a four-point lead before a Kellis Love three-pointer and a Ward jumper sent the Penguins into the locker room with a 35-29 lead.

The Penguins opened the second half with a 16-7 run to take a 51-36 advantage. The Keelhaulers answered with a 19-4 run to tie the score at 55. Another Ward jumper put Dominican up 59-55. Three consecutive Keelhauler free throws pulled the Keelhaulers within one. Larson made the back end of a pair of free throws to put Dominican up two but a Medeiros drive sent things into overtime with the score tied at 60-60.

A three-point play by Medeiros gave the Keelhaulers the lead a minute into overtime and Dominican was forced to play catch up the rest of the way. Maritime led by as much as seven in the extra period and crossed the finish line with the 72-70 victory.

Bryan led all players with 23 points in 38 minutes of action. Ward added 17 points in the loss. Larson posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in overtime.

Medeiros led the Keelhaulers with 22 points in 40 minutes of play.

The Penguins will take on the Dominican Alumni on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Conlan Center before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on Monday to face NCAA Division I University of San Francisco. Tipoff at USF is set for 7:00 p.m.
